The Buchinger therapeutic programme is carried out in a pleasant, relaxed environment in which everyone can integrate to the extent he or she wishes and share the experience of fasting with other guests. Otto Buchinger's aphorism "When the body fasts the soul goes hungry" illustrates this. Buchinger talks about the spontaneous need of those who fast for introspection and contemplation. The "healing atmosphere" of Buchinger helps those who fast to find their innermost being and thus to experience the world around them in a new way. The mental opening-up to a metaphysical reality for oneself and one's environment while fasting is part of Buchinger's holistic view of the human make-up. This possibility of encountering one's inner-most self has always been a part of fasting; it is part of a ritual found in all major religions.
