The small sanatorium which Dr. Otto Buchinger 1920 founded in Witzenhausen is the seed for the successful growth of therapeutic fasting. Two further important clinics were founded during his lifetime. In 1935 the first clinic was founded in Bad Pyrmont. In 1953 he founded the Buchinger clinic in Überlingen, Lake Constance, together with his daughter Maria and her husband Helmut Wilhelmi. Dr. Otto Buchinger is the senior consultant there for several years. He died in 1966 at the age of 88.
In 1973, Maria and Helmut Wilhelmi took the plunge and moved abroad. They opened the Clínica Buchinger in Marbella, Andalusia. Maria Buchinger not only continued the work of her father but also further developed it in the light of the latest scientific findings. With her example and her tireless work, she helps to achieve the breakthrough in Spain for health tourism in general and Buchinger therapeutic fasting in particular. She has received several awards for her life's work.

In 1995, "Doña Maria" received the Bundesverdienstkreuz (Federal Cross of Merit). She expresses her thanks with one of her fathers aphorisms: "You cannot give more than yourself. But you must not give less." In 2003 she was the first woman and foreigner to receive the "Entrepreneur of the Year" award from the Marbella trade association.

The Rotary Club of Marbella honoured her as an "exemplary citizen" in 2008. Today her daughter Jutta and her son-in-law Claus Rohrer manage Buchinger Marbella and continue her successful work. Since 1985, Buchinger Bodensee has been managed by Maria Buchinger's son Raimund Wilhelmi and his wife Dr. Françoise Wilhelmi de Toledo.
